Modified on Tue, 10 Oct 2023 at 11:22 AM

This article highlights how to use the translate tool, and language setting on Chromebooks and any Google Chrome for any operating system. Particularly helpful when a student is better able to learn and understand in their native tongue, or if they present a resource to staff who may not be familiar with the language a particular web page defaults to.

Using the "Translate to ...." tool on a webpage:

1. Open up Chrome and go to any web page you want to translate to a different language.

2. Open the "Translate to ...." tool.

-On a Chromebook: Tap the touchpad with 2 fingers at the same time anywhere on the page.

-On an iPad: Long press anywhere on the page and select the "Google Translate" option.

-On a Windows Laptop: Right click anywhere on the page.

3. Select the 3 dots on the Translate Tool box by the address bar.

4. Select the desired Language.

5. After doing this, a small Google Translate icon will appear on the right of the address bar allowing for language settings for a particular web page to changed again or reversed.

-You can switch back and forth between the detected language and the translated language.

-These settings will only be applied so long as the page is not closed.

Changing system language on ChromeOS:

1. Open the "Languages" menu in ChromeOS settings.

-Can search "Languages" using the search key.

-Can also be accessed by opening the systems settings under the "Advanced" tab.

2. Change language to whichever is desired.

       - The chromebook will need to restart after changing languages.

       - Sign-in screen and all other aspects of the chromebook will display in selected language.

3. Can also set webpages to translate to a target languages from this menu automatically.

-This can get unreliable however, recommend using the first method in this article.
