Powerwash Menu Not Appearing

Modified on Wed, 13 Oct 2021 at 10:30 AM

Powerwashing a Chromebook is the process resetting it back to factory settings. This erases all the information on your Chromebook's hard drive, including all the files in the Downloads folder. It does not delete information saved on a google drive or external hard drive.

Powerwash screen:

In order to access the Powerwash menu, you must use this keyboard shortcut from the sign in window:

Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r

Some examples of when this is used:

When we receive a laptop back into inventory, it ensures that the device does not have any unneeded data or settings that can interfere with the next user that is assigned the device.

Sometimes, when many users have signed into one device, it can sometimes cause the Operating System to be over-encumbered and slow.

What are some problems I might run into?

Problem 1:

The keyboard shortcut to bring up the powerwash menu is not working.

Solution:

  1. Power the Chromebook on.
  2. Hold these 3 buttons until the device restarts: Esc + Refresh + Power
  3. Wait for this screen to appear:
  4. Once the recovery screen is displayed, press this key combination: Ctrl + d
  5. This will attempt to enable developer mode. It will require you to turn OS Verification off by pressing Enter
  6. The device will restart and all local data will be wiped from the device.
  7. After the device restarts, the Chromebook will require you to reenable OS Verification by pressing Enter.
  8. The device will restart once more, starting from the "Welcome!" screen.
  9. You should now be able to set up the device normally and the Powerwash menu will appear when pressing the keyboard shortcut.
